A 4-Step Plan for Adding Medium as an Income Stream to an Existing Business
A little primer for you, if you already have a lot of content created and a following (somewhere).

Last night I received an email from Sean McCabe. Not a private email — an email he sent to his entire email list. He linked to a post on his websitewhere he told a story about his wife and devastating mental illness that’s requiring expensive treatment and asked his followers for help.
I’ve written about Sean before and about how he is one of the most generous people I’ve ever met, with regard to sharing information and just genuinely wanting to help other people figure out this whole entrepreneur thing. If you’re building an online business, you would definitely get a lot out of doing as he’s asking in his post about his wife and joining his membership program for a month.
I don’t know Sean well enough to reach out to him directly with what I want to talk about next. But I’ve seen a couple of other people recently who are in a position similar to his (not his personal situation with his wife, but his professional position as a writer, which I’ll talk about in a minute) who could use an influx of money — and who aren’t using Medium.
So, I thought I’d write a little guide to using Medium for people who have the tools to be successful here — but just aren’t using them right now. Maybe you have a website already where you’ve created a lot of content. Or you have an email list or a social media following, but you haven’t really started using Medium.
Medium can be a good, relatively passive, income stream if you’re already creating content somewhere else for some other purpose. Or if you’ve already created that content.
Medium can feel overwhelming — and it’s not always the most intuitive place. It’s not like you post and bang you have loads of money flowing into your bank account. There’s a learning curve and it takes some time. I’ve seen people who have are experts at other outlets give up here too quickly, because they decide it doesn’t work when it doesn’t work easily for them.
But I do think that there are people who A) are super talented, B) have really interesting things to say that would be a great addition to Medium, and C) have all the tools already lined up waiting to be used to turn Medium into a nice income stream.
